Diana Shares at 2018 SiWC

Greetings, Outlander fans!

Well, blow me down! After multiple tries last night to upload my SiWC interview with Diana, NADA! I finally fell sleep haunted, not by ghosts, but by nagging frustrations. Grrr…..

The Internet gnomes must still be in REM sleep because this morning, the video loaded without a hitch! Go figure???

Days ago at 2018 NYCC, I asked Diana if I might interview her about charitable work she performs here in Surrey, B.C. – actually, has performed for the last 27 years! And, she said, yes! I share this facet of Diana because I think, for most, this will be new and news.

Do you know any woman busier than Herself? I can’t think of one. But, this wonderful woman finds time to share writing expertice and experience with some unexpected recipients. She describes the beneficiaries of her gift in the video.

I hope you watch and will be inspired to give a gift to your community. I see this as one way we can show our gratitude for the gifts she shares so generously.

As the video reveals, Diana’s work with prison inmates in Canada is a deeply meaningful labor of love. I thank her for the candor and willingness to open her heart to us. It was wonderful and inspiring to hear of her generous efforts, especially today when we drown in so much negativity.

We enjoyed a glass of wine together and another hour and a half flew by! She had to change clothes for a dinner date and then off to the Grandview Indigo book store for the author panel. Bye, Diana!

Oh, I must not forget her wonderful nails! A lovely green hue, which if I recall correctly, is her fav color!

(Dear reader, I have tried everything to right this image but it refuses to comply.  Hope you can still enjoy the lovely color of Diana’s nails!)

TY, Diana!

The deeply grateful,

  1. Wow. I love her even more- beyond her amazing talent as a writer, I am humbled to witness her servants heart. Lovely.

  2. A most thorough, revealing interview of Diana I have ever watched. Her compassion, kindness and integrity are a beacon of light to all. I love her. Her expressive hands are delightful to watch!

  3. Excellent post! I knew she had spoken at Matsqui years ago from someone incarcerated there. Didn’t realize she has done this many times.
I mush up with emotion too. She brought tears to my eyes and tenderness to my heart. Sympathy crier, here!
I’ve learned much about Roman Catholic faith, among numerous other subjects, from her books. She is phenomenal, as a writer, story-teller, and teacher. Her language is lyrical and beautiful, spiced with keen scientific observation. Many descriptive passages chime in my ear and shimmer before my eyes long after I read them. Thank you both for this lovely insight into my favorite author

    1. Hi Lynda. Thank you so much for your comment. I am gratified that you enjoyed the conversation. I was aiming at an interaction that would feel as if viewers were seated at the table with me, so it wasn’t a typical interview.

I am grateful that Diana allowed me to video this important work she does and share it with the world.

  4. Great conversation! I often feel that political correctness muzzles frank discussions of personal spirituality. It seems it’s only ‘free speech’ until someone else is offended by it, and then it becomes ‘hate speech’, however it was originally intended. It was refreshing to hear an honest discussion about someone’s personal faith that had nothing to do with political or commercial interests. I would have liked to take that further into a question of how Diana interprets sexuality through the lens of her faith, and how that translates into her writing.

    1. Hello Debra. Thank you so much for your comment. This really wasn’t a typical interview. I was reaching for a conversation wherein the listener could feel as if they were there. I just wanted to give her the opportunity to tell her fans what motivates this gift to the incarcerated and for her fans to learn of this dimension of our beloved author. I am not Roman Catholic, but that doesn’t matter because Diana was speaking in a universal language. At least this is how I see it. Seems to me there was something for everyone regardless of their personal convictions.

  5. This was a wonderful interview, thank you. Diana, through her exquisite writing, gives us all inspiration to be better people and to hope for a better world through our actions. What an exceptional person she is.

  6. One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. I’m so tired of interviewers rehashing the same old tired questions over and over. This one hits it from the human interest point of view and asks questions that no one else asks. No doubt Diana was happy to talk about something different for a change too.

    1. Ah, TY, Vanda so much for your kind comment. I actually was aiming for a conversation with Diana rather than a typical interview. We were relaxed and enjoying the discussion. I am deeply grateful that she chose to open herself so generously to us. 👍🏻

  7. Wow, what an interesting interview. Not at all what I was expecting. Thank you for sharing with us. I can’t say anything better than what others have said already. I am beyond humbled at how selfless herself is. I didn’t think it possible to like her more. It is!

    1. 😁 Isn’t it wonderful when you find you like a famous person better as you know more about them? This is often not the case. TY so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate this. I am so glad you enjoyed our discussion! 😁

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated this interview. You managed to uncover another layer of this multitalented, intelligent, gifted and complex lady. You asked pertinent questions that allowed Diana to open up and expound on her generous gift of her time to a population that is often forgotten. I also teared up at the end when you asked the last question. Her faith does come through in her writing and explains a great deal of certain parts of the book, mostly Claire’s decisions . Her talk has inspired me to donate some useful textbooks to prisons which I had not previously thought of doing. Thank you.

    1. Hi Beverly. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I tried to have a honest conversation with Diana rather than adhere to a prescribed interview. This approach enables us to appreciate an expanded view of this splendid woman. Although you could not see me, I also teared up, deeply moved by her humble and candid response. I thank her for allowing us to be inspired by this very special gift she shares so generously.

  9. Faith as written in Diana’s books has always come across as visceral, lived out, not just empty ritual, and going way beyond ecumenical boundaries. I love that Jamie and Claire recognize and value the indigenous people’s faith and that Claire cares about even a prostitute’s health. They value all who cross their path. I also love her nods to a complex creator who cares, and the wonder she instills about every plant, animal, human character in her books.

    1. Oh, well written, Kathy! Diana certainly reveals her faith through her characters and their associations with all of nature. This comes from a well within her and we sre the lucky recipients of this gift. TY for your comment! 😊

  10. The poignant, humble close moved me to tears. What an incredible gift you shared in this interview. Thank you, Karmen.

    1. Hello Lisa. Truth be told, the ending brought me to tears, also. I feel deeply grateful not only for her example but that she agreed to allow us to share this special part of her life. TY for your comment! 👍🏻

  13. Wow, so many layers to this complex, intelligent, and fascinating woman. Thanks for posting this!

  14. Thank you for this interview. Really appreciate all the facets of Diana. It all shows in her magnificent work.
